We are big fans of cinnamon rolls, so I figured I would give it a try to make made-from-scratch cinnamon rolls for breakfast. I used a basic white bread recipe for the dough and then added cinnamon into the dough while I kneaded. It resulted in a really pretty spiral of red-brown cinnamon and pale white dough. After baking, the paleness remained, but they tasted pretty good, so I wasn't too worried about the color. I think I will add cinnamon to the dough mix to darken it, and then add more cinnamon for the classic spiral.
What you will need to make the dough:
· 1 ¼ cups of milk
· 4 tablespoons of butter
· 3 cups of bread flour
· 1 teaspoon of salt
· 3 teaspoons of sugar
· 1 tablespoon of yeast
Mix these all together to create your dough. I sprinkled about a tablespoon total of cinnamon while I kneaded the dough which made a neat design that I thought was very pretty.
I used a rolling pin to roll out the dough into an 1/8 inch thick sheet. I cut 1/2 inch wide strips using a knife and then rolled the strips up into a classic roll. I placed each roll onto a baking sheet and baked in the oven at 350F until done.
While the cinnamon rolls baked, I made icing using powdered sugar, butter, milk, and vanilla extract.
You will need:
· ½ cup of butter
· 3 cups of powder sugar
· 1-2 teaspoons of vanilla extract
· 1 ½ tablespoons of milk
Mix these all together until you have a lovely, light weight icing to drizzle on your cinnamon rolls!
